North America's Largest Wolf Sanctuary Launches National Campaign to Save Wolfdogs at Risk

New Mexico Sanctuary Urgently Seeks Donations to Rescue 25 Wolves and Wolfdogs from Euthanasia

RAMAH, NEW MEXICO (November 18, 2024) — Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary, North America’s largest wolf sanctuary, located in New Mexico, is calling on animal lovers and conservationists across the nation to help save the lives of 25 rescued wolfdogs through a crucial fundraising campaign. In an unprecedented rescue effort, Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary seeks to raise $1,500,000 by the end of 2024 to acquire property from Indigo Mountain Nature Center in Colorado, a critical move that will secure a safe haven for the wolfdogs at immediate risk of euthanasia.

Following the passing of Indigo Mountain’s Founder and Executive Director, Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary has stepped up to continue her mission of rescuing and caring for wolfdogs and other exotic rescues. The funds raised will allow Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary to acquire Indigo Mountain’s property and continue to provide the 25 wolves and wolfdogs with protection. This is not just about the immediate lives of these animals; it’s about preserving a vital sanctuary that embodies hope and refuge for non-releasable wolves and other wild animals in Colorado.

The scarcity of dedicated wolf sanctuaries across North America has reached a critical point as many facilities are at capacity and often are forced to turn away animals in desperate need of care. The potential loss of Indigo Mountain would mean one less safe haven for countless wild canids, intensifying the crisis they face due to the exotic pet trade.

“Preserving Indigo Mountain allows us to grow our rescue efforts and stay true to our mission of providing sanctuary to more animals in need,” said Brittany McDonald, Executive Director at Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary. “This property acquisition is an essential step to guarantee these animals the safe, nurturing environment they deserve.”

The fundraising campaign will go toward securing the property and facilitating essential improvements to the sanctuary to help ascertain a USDA license to be able to open to the public. USDA licensing will ultimately help to create a public space for visitors to learn more about the wolfdogs and the importance of their wild counterparts.

How to Help
